Teach Your Children At Their Level Of Understanding
Children are smarter than you think. They have spongy brains that enable them to absorb every bit of information around them – good or bad. Teaching children about the dangers of obesity at an early age allows them to internalize the value of being fit and healthy.
However, explaining the complex patho-physiology of the diseases caused by obesity may not make any sense to them. The best approach is by teaching them based on their level of understanding; you may show pictures that showcase the effect of obesity and give examples of people you both know who could be suffering from the effects of obesity.
You could explain the simple patho-physiology of obesity as: “The cookie goes into the stomach so people will have energy to work and play; but if people will just sit down and watch TV, the cookie will be changed to fat. Too much fat can cause traffic in the body and prevent blood from going to the heart, the heart can’t breath and people could die.”
That’s one way to explain myocardial infarction or heart attack without mentioning any medical jargon.
Teach Your Child About The Benefits Of Eating Healthy
Teaching children, while they are still young, the benefits of eating healthy food will determine their food choices later in life. Never deprive a child from eating what he wants, however you can limit the quantity of the food they eat as well as the food options they have.
Childhood obesity
Childhood obesity has many health risks
Since you do the grocery, buy the kinds of foods that you wanted your child to eat. If you do not want him to eat junk foods for snacks, then don’t buy one; but instead buy, fresh fruits that s/he can easily grab from the kitchen counter like apples, peaches, and blackberries.
Also, make sure that your child gets to eat food from the different food groups in recommended amount. This is what we call a balanced diet. If your child wants to eat at McDonalds, say yes but make sure that this happens only once in a while and explain to him why.
Teach Your Child About The Benefits Of Exercise
Going to a gym for a daily dose of treadmill may not sound fun for a kid. So instead of doing that, let kids be kids and encourage them to play with other kids in the park. Teach your kids the importance of being active and how it makes them healthy.
If you have a sport or have an exercise routine, explain to them why you are doing so and encourage them to join you. This way, you’re not only teaching your kids the benefits of burning the calories by setting a good example but you get to bond with your kids as well.
Everything starts with self discipline. What we put inside our body is easier to control than struggling on burning the aftermath of our actions. By teaching the kids the importance of healthy living, you’re greatly helping them to avoid obesity.
